National Recovery Month
September is National Recovery Month - a time to celebrate recovery, honor every journey, and remind our community that recovery is possible. Learn how Anchor Recovery supports individuals and families throughout Minnesota. Every September, communities across the country recognize National Recovery Month—a time to celebrate recovery, honor the people walking the journey, and recognize the families, professionals, and communities who support them along the way.
National Recovery Month began in 1989 and has grown into a nationwide observance celebrating the strength of the recovery community and reminding us of an important truth:
Recovery is possible.
Recovery Looks Different for Everyone
There is no single path to recovery.
For one person, recovery may begin by walking into treatment for the first time. For another, it may mean attending a support meeting, reconnecting with family, returning to work, rebuilding relationships, or simply making the decision to try again today.
Some people find recovery through professional treatment. Others incorporate peer support, faith, therapy, medication, family, community, or a combination of resources.
What works for one person may not be what works for another—and that's okay.
Recovery is personal.
Recovery Is About More Than Not Using Substances
Recovery can involve rebuilding many areas of a person's life.
It can mean learning how to manage stress differently, repairing relationships, improving physical and emotional health, creating stability, developing new coping skills, and rediscovering interests and goals that may have been lost along the way.
Sometimes progress comes in big milestones.
Other times, progress is simply getting through a difficult day and choosing to keep moving forward.
Both matter.
Breaking the Stigma Around Asking for Help
One of the most important things we can do during Recovery Month—and throughout the entire year—is continue changing the way we talk about substance use and recovery.
Seeking help should never be viewed as a weakness.
Substance use disorders are health conditions, and people deserve access to compassionate, respectful, evidence-based care without judgment or shame.
When communities talk openly about recovery, we make it easier for people who are struggling to believe that asking for help is possible.
Celebrating the People Behind Recovery
Recovery Month is also an opportunity to recognize the many people who help make recovery possible.
We celebrate the individuals doing the work of recovery every day.
We recognize the families and loved ones who provide encouragement and support.
And we appreciate the counselors, peer recovery specialists, healthcare professionals, probation and community partners, advocates, and others who continue showing up for people when support matters most.
Recovery doesn't happen in isolation. Connection and community matter.
What Recovery Means at Anchor Recovery
At Anchor Recovery, we believe people deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect—regardless of where they are in their journey.
Recovery isn't about perfection.
It's about progress, possibility, and building a life that feels worth protecting.
Whether someone is taking their first step, returning after a setback, or has been in recovery for many years, every step forward deserves recognition.
This September, we celebrate everyone who has chosen recovery, everyone considering making a change, and everyone who continues supporting others along the way.
Your story isn't finished.
There is hope.
There is help.
And recovery is real.
